Moreau No. 8 Schoolhouse

In 2002 2002 the Historical Society of Moreau and South Glens Falls was gifted a one-room schoolhouse, which tax records date to 1812, from Eugene C and Nancy S Clark.

The schoolhouse was one of the ten original schoolhouses erected under the education laws of 1812. It was the oldest standing one-room schoolhouse in the Town of Moreau and was located at the intersection of US Route 9 and Nolan Road.

District 8 was formed from original Districts 2 and 3 and is shown on the early maps of the Town. The schoolhouse was used into the early 1930’s when population size demanded a larger school be built. A three-room school was built on property on the east side of Route 9, known as the Bluebird school, was used throughout the years and well after centralization occurred. Currently, the Bluebird school has become the District Administration Office.

In the summer of 2002, the schoolhouse was dismantled, each piece was measured and labeled, and the 180-year old building was transported on a flat-bed truck to its current location. The timers and boards were all power washed and stacked for winter storage. Restoration was begun in 2003 and it was erected on a full basement utilizing the original posts and beams. Windows and door are original to the era. Trim and siding are typical of the time period, and a slate roof was used because of less upkeep and durability (the original roof was a shake roof).

Restoration has continued with landscaping and interior work. The original wainscoting and thick pine plank flooring re-create the typical look of the one-room schoolhouse.

The schoolhouse is open to the public during regular historic home house, during special events and by appointment.
